Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr.’s rousing reception last Saturday at the grand opening of his campaign headquarters in the Eastgate Shopping Center underscores his big advantage in the special election for Memphis mayor: He knows voters, and they know him.

“I wish you would catch the fever – and it’s the A C fever,” urged attorney Ruby Wharton, who pleaded with her husband’s supporters to talk up his candidacy for Memphis city mayor.

Scratch City Court Clerk Thomas Long from the race for Memphis mayor.

Long is expected to announce Tuesday afternoon that he is endorsing Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton in the Oct. 15 special election for Memphis mayor.

Long was among more than three dozen prospective contenders who have pulled qualifying petitions from the Shelby County Election Commission.

Continuing a roll-out week that began with his drawing a petition to run for Memphis mayor on Thursday, Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton opened his campaign headquarters before a large crowd of supporters at the Eastgate shopping center on Saturday, simultaneously announcing six “co-chairs” of his campaign.
