But it’s not just because of the message it imparts with the refrain, “I think I can, I think I can.” The time a parent spends with his or her child reading the book is vital, child development experts have said. Shelby County Books from Birth gives parents the opportunity to spend that learning time with their children. The program, established in 2005 by Mayor A C Wharton Jr., was created to implement and manage Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program in Shelby County. It is an approved affiliate of Imagination Library and the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation. For those parents who sign up their children, one free book is mailed every month until age 5. |

BILL DRIES | The Daily News It was an idea that Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr. dropped into his state of the county speech Tuesday to the Memphis Rotary Club. Wharton decided to go through with his call for a law that would make parental neglect of a child's education a crime after a morning visit with a group of about 40 juvenile offenders in a detention center. The group included the teenager who shot a classmate earlier this month at Mitchell High School. "Folks, (these youths are) not living in the same world we're living in," Wharton said. "They don't see things the way we see things. They don't hear things the way we hear. They don't feel the way we feel. They don't cry the way we cry. They don't hurt. It's frightening." |

By Michael Lollar (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal Monday, April 21, 2008 "They say beware of people bearing gifts. I have a gift," Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton told the congregation at Easthaven Church of Christ. It was the end of a daylong tour in which Wharton stopped to thank some of the churches that donated to a disaster-relief fund after tornadoes and high winds swept the Hickory Hill area Feb. 5. A list compiled by the mayor's office showed donations ranging from $100 at Progressive Baptist Church to $10,000 at Brown Missionary Baptist Church. Easthaven members donated $635.46, according to the list. From 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wharton visited eight churches, presenting each a plaque with the mayor's thank you for being part of "a giving caring community." |
